Bridal Lace Trims & Motifs: Choosing and Sewing Them
Which trim suits a veil, a hem or a neckline, how our trims are sold, and easy tips for sewing them on at home.
Why use a trim?
- A ready-made edge. A scalloped trim finishes a hem, neckline, sleeve or veil without a turned hem.
- Detail where you want it. Add lace, beading or feathers exactly where the eye should go: a neckline, a waistline or a cuff.
- Matches our laces. Some trims are made to go with a lace or with each other, like Bold Floral Lace Trim (1663t), which matches our Bold Floral Lace, and the plain and beaded versions of the 1294 trim.
Which trim for which job?
| Narrow corded trim (1391T) | A 3 cm corded trim with tiny floral motifs and scalloped edges. Great for: veil edges, piping and fine edging. |
| Guipure trim (1624T) | A 17 cm guipure with small daisies and pointed scallops on both sides. Great for: veils, bridal and christening wear. |
| Fine scalloped trims | 1325T (12 cm), 1326t (13 cm), 1658t and 1663t (27 cm), 1668t (30 cm) and 1294T (34 cm), with scalloped and eyelash edges. Great for: hems, necklines and sleeves. |
| Wide corded trims | 1268T (30 cm, an arched corded scallop), 1671T (30 cm, double edged) and 1524T (36 cm, double edged, with paisley swirls). Great for: deep hem borders, bands and bodices. |
| Beaded lace trims | 1629bt (23 cm, with sequins, beads and pearls), 1294bt (34 cm) and 1573bt (42 cm). Great for: bodices, necklines and belts. |
| Borders and feather | Botanical Border (PR110), 3D flower Border Trim (T28209) and Feather Beaded Trim (W14342), soft ostrich feather on tulle. Great for: cuffs, necklines and hems. |
| Flower motifs | Ivory flowers in three sizes, some with silver thread. Great for: scattering over a skirt, veil or bodice. |
Choosing a width
- 3 to 6 cm: veil edges, cuffs, straps and piping.
- 12 to 17 cm: sleeve ends, necklines and hems on lighter fabrics.
- 23 to 42 cm: deep hem borders, bodice panels, yokes and wide belts.
How our trims are sold
Most of our lace trims are made in panels about 2.7 to 3 metres long (the 1391T in 2.85 metre panels, and the feather trim in 1.7 metre panels), so if you order more than one panel's length, it may come in more than one piece. Our guipure trims aren't made in panels.
Trimming a veil
- Lay the veil flat and pin the trim along the edge, easing it gently around the curves.
- Sew it on by hand along the outline of the motifs, with small stitches, or with a narrow zigzag on the machine.
- Trim the tulle away from behind the scallops for a clean, see-through edge.
- Narrow trims like the 1391T suit the finest veils, in silk tulle or soft tulle.
Sewing trims on
- Use a fresh, fine needle (size 70) and a fine mercerised cotton thread in a matching colour. Silk thread is lovely for tacking and hand sewing.
- Tack the trim in place first, then sew it on by hand along the motif outline, so it lies flat and moves with the fabric.
- On a beaded trim, move the beads out of the way of your stitching line, and keep any beads that come loose so you can sew them back on.
- To join two lengths, overlap them so the motifs line up, stitch around a motif outline, then trim away the extra lace.
Ivory and matching
We call many shades "ivory", and they can be quite different from one trim or fabric to the next, so we always recommend ordering samples of the trim and the fabric it's going on, and comparing them side by side.
Pressing
Press face down on a thick, clean towel, on a low setting, through a pressing cloth, so the motifs sink in rather than flatten. Test on a scrap first.
On beaded, 3D or feather trims, keep the iron off the embellishment completely.
Questions
Which trim is best for a veil?
A narrow, light trim, like our 3 cm Corded Scalloped Lace Trim (1391T) or the Scalloped Floral Guipure Lace Trim (1624T), sewn along the edge of the tulle.
How are lace trims sold?
Most of our lace trims are made in panels about 2.7 to 3 metres long, so longer orders may come in more than one piece. Guipure trims aren't made in panels.
Can I sew a lace trim on by machine?
Yes, with a narrow zigzag along the motif outline. Sewing by hand gives the softest, most invisible finish.
Do any trims match your laces?
Yes. Bold Floral Lace Trim (1663t) matches our Bold Floral Lace, and the 1294 trim comes plain and beaded.
