What to make with it
- Evening and party dresses
- Skirts and tops
- Bridal and formal wear
Cutting
- Cut as a single layer, laid on paper or a cotton sheet so it doesn't slide, with all the pieces facing the same way.
- Pin only inside the seam allowance, or use pattern weights, as pins can leave marks.
- Use sharp scissors or a rotary cutter.
Sewing
- Use a fresh, fine needle (size 70) and a good-quality polyester thread. A worn needle can snag the glossy face.
- Sew with a 2 to 2.5 mm stitch, holding the fabric gently taut in front of and behind the needle.
- Unpicked stitches can leave holes, so test the fit before the final seams.
Hems
- Hand-finished hem. Machine stitching shows on a glossy satin, so for dresses and skirts, finish the raw edge, turn the hem up once and blind stitch it by hand with small, loose stitches that catch only a thread, so they don't pull or mark the face.
- Faced hem. On a curved or full skirt, a shaped facing sewn to the hem edge, understitched and hand stitched inside gives a smooth, invisible finish.
- For light pieces and tops, the weighted narrow hem on our faux acetate satin page works well.
Pressing
Polyester can melt or go shiny under a hot iron, so press on the synthetic (low) setting, through a pressing cloth. Test on a scrap first.
