Our stretch polyester crepes, how they compare with our other polyesters, and tips for sewing them.
About our stretch crepes
- Textured and matte. Heavy crepes with a fine, textured matte finish and a heavy yet soft fall.
- Two stretches. Stretch polyester crepe has a two-way stretch (304 gsm), and multi stretch crepe stretches four ways (270 gsm).
- Recycled too. A lighter recycled stretch crepe, made from recycled bottles.

What to make with it

Cutting
- Cut with the stretch going around the body.
- Lay the fabric flat without stretching it, and use pattern weights or pins inside the seam allowance.
- Use sharp scissors or a rotary cutter.
Sewing
- Use a stretch needle (size 80 or 90) and a good-quality polyester thread.
- Sew with a narrow zigzag or an overlocker so the seams can stretch.
- Stabilise the waist, shoulders and necklines with stay tape so they don't stretch out.
Hems
- Finish the raw edge of the hem allowance first, with an overlocker or zigzag.
- By hand. Turn the hem up once (3 to 4 cm) and hand stitch it with a blind catch stitch, or with widely spaced figure-eight stitches, which let a stretch crepe stretch between them.
- By machine. A stretch blind hem stitch, or a twin needle from the right side for a sporty finish.
Pressing
Press on the synthetic (low) setting, through a pressing cloth, and don't stretch the fabric as you press. Test on a scrap first.
