Textured and Sparkle Tulle: Uses and How to Sew It
Our glitter, sparkle, Lurex and water drop tulles, how they compare, and tips for layering and sewing them.
Which textured or sparkle tulle?
| Sparkle tulle | 100% nylon, 140 cm. Silver foil spots on a soft ivory tulle. Great for: skirts and dresses with a scattered sparkle. |

Layering for sparkle
Glitter tulle is best used in a layered skirt. Put a layer or two of plain tulle over it: it adds depth to the sparkle and helps hold in any loose glitter. Glitter does shed a little, so expect some sparkle on the cutting table.

Matching colours
The metallic colour changes with what's underneath. We recommend ordering samples and layering them over your dress fabric before you buy.
Cutting
- Cut on a surface you can easily sweep or shake out, as glitter sheds a little.
- Use sharp scissors or a rotary cutter, and pattern weights instead of pins.
- Cut all the pieces facing the same way, so the shimmer looks even.
Sewing
- Use a fresh, fine needle (size 70) and a fine thread in a matching colour, or clear monofilament thread.
- Sew with tissue paper underneath if the tulle catches, then tear it away.
- Line anything worn next to the skin, so the shimmer threads don't scratch.
Edges
Tulle doesn't fray, so you can leave the edges raw for a soft, invisible finish. For a defined edge, add a narrow rolled hem, or bind it with ribbon.
Pressing
Press from the wrong side, on the lowest setting, with no steam, through a pressing cloth: heat can dull glitter, foil and Lurex, and melt the tulle. Test on a scrap first.
Water drop tulle: never iron it. The droplets are resin, which can warp or cloud with heat. Hang it and steam gently from a distance, keeping the steam moving.

A little. Layering plain tulle over it adds depth and helps hold in any loose glitter.
What is Lurex tulle?
Tulle with a metallic Lurex yarn woven through. Ours is Italian, 90% polyester and 10% Lurex, 45 gsm and ultra soft.
Which is the most subtle sparkle?
Crystal tulle, with a light shimmer. Glitter tulle gives the boldest sparkle.
