Feather Embellished Tulle and Trim: How to Sew It
Our ostrich feather tulles and trim, what to make with them, and tips for sewing feathers at home.
About our feather tulles
- Soft ostrich feathers. Set on fine tulle with beads, pearls or sequins, for movement and a soft, airy look.
- Three tulles and a trim. All in ivory, for bridal and evening wear.
Which feather tulle?
| Fabric | What it's like |

| Feather Sequined Tulle (G3023) | Ostrich feathers and clear sequins all through the design. 130 cm. |
| Feather Beaded Trim (W14342) | Soft ostrich feathers with a delicate beaded edge, mounted on tulle. Ivory and silver. |
Buying feather trim
The feather trim is made in panels about 1.7 metres long, so if you order more than that, it will come in more than one piece. Our feather tulles come off the roll, in longer lengths.
What to make with it
- Bridal overskirts and overlays
- Sleeves, capes and cover-ups
- Feather hems and cuffs, with the trim
- Reception and evening dresses
- Christening gowns
For other embellished tulles, see our sequin and beaded fabric guide.
Cutting
- Always cut flat on the table as a single layer: don't fold it and cut double.
- Lay it right side up, and plan where the feathers fall at hems, necklines and centre lines.
- Snip from the wrong side, sliding the scissors under the feathers so you cut the tulle, not the feathers.
- Use an old pair of scissors where you cut through beads or sequins.
- Keep any beads, sequins or feathers that come loose, to sew back on later.
Sewing
- Clear the seam allowances: lift the feathers and snip away any beads or sequins inside the allowance, knotting the loose thread ends.
- Use a fresh, fine needle (size 70), a fine thread in a matching colour, and a zipper foot so you can stitch close to the embellishment.
- As you sew, smooth the feathers away from the seam line so they don't get caught in the stitching. If one does, ease it out gently with a pin.
- For a structured bodice, underline with silk organza: hand tack it to the wrong side of each piece, then sew the two as one.
- Sew the feather trim on by hand along its tulle edge, so it moves freely.
- Line the garment so nothing scratches the skin.
Edges
Tulle doesn't fray, so you can trim close to the embellishment and leave the edge as it is, or face it with a narrow strip of tulle or silk organza. For a soft, floaty finish, add the feather trim to a hem, cuff or neckline.
Pressing
Keep the iron away from the feathers. If the tulle needs pressing, press face down on a thick, clean towel, on a low setting, through a pressing cloth, only where there are no feathers. Fluff the feathers back up with your fingers after sewing. Test on a scrap first.
Questions
What are the feathers made of?
Our feather tulles and trim use soft ostrich feathers, set with beads, pearls or sequins.
Can I sew feather tulle on a machine?
Yes. Clear the beads from the seam allowances, smooth the feathers away from the seam line, and sew slowly with a zipper foot.
How is the feather trim sold?
In panels about 1.7 metres long, so longer orders may come in more than one piece.
What colour is it?
All our feather tulles and trim are ivory; the trim has a silver beaded edge.
