Soft Furnishing Fabric: How to Choose and Sew It
Silk dupion, taffeta, jacquard and organza for cushions, curtains and table linen, with easy tips for sewing them at home.
Which fabric for your project?
Our soft furnishing fabrics, side by side.
| Silk dupion | Medium weight, crisp, with natural slubs, in more than 50 colours. Great for: cushions, curtains and bedspreads. |
| Washed silk dupion | Ivory dupion with a washed finish: softer, with a low lustre. Great for: softly gathered curtains and throws. |
| Silk taffeta | Crisp and smooth, with a slight sheen. Ivory, white and black. Great for: cushions and curtains with a crisp fall. |
| Metallic jacquard | A woven pattern with metallic threads, 140 cm, with a stiff fall. Great for: statement cushions and table runners. |
| Stripe organza | Sheer silk and viscose organza with a self stripe about 6.5 to 8 cm wide, 110 cm. Great for: sheer curtains and table runners. |
What to make with it
- Cushions and bolsters
- Curtains
- Bedspreads and throws
- Table runners
- Sheer curtains and drapes
Cutting
- Match the pattern on jacquard and stripe organza across cushion fronts and curtain widths, and allow extra fabric for matching.
- Our Metallic Jacquard (Y399) has a selvedge on one edge only, so plan your layout from that edge.
- Dupion frays, so finish the cut edges soon after cutting.
Sewing
- Dupion, taffeta and jacquard: use a fresh needle (size 70 or 80) and a good-quality polyester or mercerised cotton thread. Silk thread is lovely for tacking and hand sewing. Finish the seam allowances with an overlocker or zigzag, so they don't fray.
- Stripe organza: use a fresh, fine needle (size 70) and a fine mercerised cotton thread. French seams look neatest on a sheer fabric.
- Cushions: put an invisible zip in the back or bottom seam for a clean finish.
- Curtains: line silk curtains: a lining protects the silk from direct sun and helps the curtains hang well.
Hems
- Curtains: a deep double hem at the bottom, turned up twice, gives weight and a straight hang; use narrower double hems down the sides. Stitch them by hand, or with a blind hem, so nothing shows on the face.
- Sheer organza curtains: a deep double hem shows through as one clean band.
- Table runners: a double-fold hem with mitred corners, or line the runner and turn it through.
Colour matching
Colours look different on every screen, so we always recommend ordering samples and looking at them in the room, in daylight and at night. You can also see the whole dupion range on our colour cards.
Pressing
- Dupion, taffeta and organza: a dry iron on the silk setting, through a pressing cloth, with no steam or water spray, as water drops can leave marks.
- Metallic jacquard: a low setting, through a pressing cloth.
- Test on a scrap first.

Dupion is 137 cm (some ivory and white 150 cm), metallic jacquard 140 cm and stripe organza 110 cm.
Can I see the colours first?
