Guide
Silk Quilting Fabric: How to Choose and Sew It
Why quilters love silk dupion, which of our fabrics suits each project, and tips for cutting, piecing and pressing silk at home.
Why silk for quilting?
- Glowing colour. Silk dupion has a natural lustre and a lightly slubbed texture, so colours look rich and deep.
- A huge colour range. Our dupion comes in more than 50 colours, from soft neutrals to jewel tones.
- Crisp to work with. Dupion and taffeta have a crisp handle, so they piece and press neatly.
Which fabric for your quilt?
| Silk dupion | Medium weight, 90 gsm, crisp, with natural slubs. 137 cm wide (ivory and white also 150 cm). Great for: quilt tops, cushions and wall hangings. |
| Washed silk dupion | Ivory dupion with a washed finish: softer, with a low lustre. Great for: softer quilts and throws. |
| Silk taffeta | Crisp and smooth, with a slight sheen. Ivory, white and black. Great for: accents and crisp patches. |
| Silk cotton voile | 30% silk, 70% cotton: light and soft. Great for: light quilts and appliqué. |
| Linen | 100% linen, mid weight. It softens with wash and wear. Great for: casual quilts and cushions. |
| Banana peel fabric | Plant fibre with a silky handle, 110 cm. Great for: accents and small pieces. |
| Rose petal satin | Plant fibre with a satin face, 110 cm. Great for: accents and small pieces. |

Cutting
- Dupion frays, so many quilters back it with a lightweight fusible interfacing before cutting. It stops fraying and stretching, so the pieces handle like quilting cotton. Test on a scrap first.
- Allow a slightly wider seam allowance than usual, about 1 cm, as silk frays more than cotton.
- Dupion's slubs run across the fabric, so cut all the pieces the same way for an even look.
Sewing
- Dupion and taffeta: use a fresh needle (size 70 or 80) and a good-quality polyester or mercerised cotton thread. Silk thread is lovely for tacking and hand sewing.
- Silk cotton voile: use a fresh, fine needle (size 70) and a fine mercerised cotton thread.
- Linen: use a fresh needle (size 80 or 90) and a good-quality polyester thread.
- A walking foot, if you have one, helps the layers feed evenly when you quilt.
- Try not to unpick dupion: needle holes can show.
Edges and binding
Finish quilts with a double-fold binding. Dupion makes a lovely, crisp binding: cut the strips, fold them in half and sew them to the edge, then turn them to the back and slipstitch them by hand. On cushions, there's nothing to hem: just finish the seam allowances so they don't fray.
Colour matching
Colours look different on every screen, so we always recommend ordering samples before you plan a quilt. You can also see the whole dupion range on our colour cards.
Pressing
- Dupion and taffeta: a dry iron on the silk setting, through a pressing cloth, with no steam or water spray, as water drops can leave marks. Test on a scrap first.
- Linen: a hot iron and steam, through a pressing cloth.
- Voile: the silk setting, on the reverse, with light or no steam.
- Press seams gently, lifting the iron rather than sliding it, so the pieces don't stretch.
