Silk Satin: Which One to Choose
How our silk satins compare, which suits your project, silk or polyester, and where to find sewing tips for each.
Why silk satin?
- It drapes like water. Silk satin falls softly against the body and moves as you do.
- A soft, rich sheen. A gentle glow rather than a hard shine, with colours that look deep and clear.
- It breathes. Silk is a natural fibre, so it's comfortable against the skin all day and all night.
- A weight for every project. From fluid 19 momme sandwash for slips and pillowcases, through soft 25 momme satin, to 174 gsm crepe satin and sculptural duchess satin for gowns.
Certified silk. All of our silk satins are pure mulberry silk (stretch satin has 7% Lycra for stretch), certified to two independent standards:
- GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): the silk is organic, and traced from the farm to the finished cloth.
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100: tested for harmful substances, so it's safe against the skin.

Which one for your project?
| Slip dresses and bias-cut skirts | Sandwash satin for a fluid drape, or crepe satin for a heavier, more luxurious fall. |
| Blouses and camisoles | Sandwash satin, worn satin side out or with the matte side showing, or the softer, weightier silk satin 25mm. |
| Sleepwear, lingerie and pillowcases | Sandwash satin: soft and smooth on the skin. Here's how to make a silk pillowcase. |
| Linings | Sandwash satin, or silk satin 25mm for a richer weight, makes a beautiful, soft lining for jackets and coats. |
| Fitted dresses and pants | Stretch satin moves with you. |
| Draped evening and bridal gowns | Crepe satin, or hammered satin for a lighter, luminous gown. |
| Structured wedding gowns | Duchess satin for sculpted shapes, queen satin for soft volume. See bridal satin. |
Silk or polyester satin?
We sell both, and each has its place.
- Silk satin breathes, drapes softly against the body and has a gentle, natural glow. It's the one for garments worn close to the skin, and for pieces you'll keep. We recommend dry cleaning; our fabric care guide has the details.
- Polyester satin is strong, easy to care for and quick to dry. See our stretch polyester satin, liquid satin and faux acetate satin.
- A plant-based satin: rose petal satin is made from cellulose, not silk.
Choosing colours
Sandwash satin comes in 52 colours, from ivory and nude to emerald, port and gunmetal. Many quite different off-white shades are all called "ivory", so for anything colour matched, order samples first, or get the lightweight silk sample card.
Making a silk pillowcase
A silk pillowcase is a lovely first silk project. Sandwash satin is the classic choice, in dozens of colours. At 19 momme it's the sweet spot for bedding:
- Durable. Heavy enough to wear well, night after night.
- Soft. Sandwashing gives it a soft, slightly peachy handle that's smooth against your skin and hair.
- Easy to care for. It's washed while it's being made, so it shrinks very little (about 2%), and it's one of our silks that can be hand washed. See our fabric care guide.
- How much: 1.8 m makes two standard pillowcases (48 × 73 cm) with an envelope flap, with a little to spare.
- Cut: one piece per pillowcase, 51 cm wide and 167 cm long. That's 73 cm for the front and the back, 15 cm for the flap, and 3 cm at each end for the hems.
- Hem: turn a narrow double hem on both short ends.
- Sew: fold it into an envelope with the 15 cm flap tucked inside, and sew the two sides with French seams, so there are no raw edges inside.
Sewing silk satin
- Cut one layer at a time, on top of a sheet of paper if it slides, with very sharp scissors or a rotary cutter.
- Use pattern weights, or fine pins inside the seam allowance only: pins can leave marks on satin.
- Start with a fresh, fine needle and sew a test seam first, as unpicked stitches can show.
- Press from the wrong side on the silk setting, through a pressing cloth.
Each satin has its own guide with seams and hems to suit it: sandwash, crepe, stretch and bridal satins.
