    What is grace satin?

    • A silk and viscose blend. 32% silk and 68% viscose, with a satin finish on both sides.
    • Heavy and structured. About 222 gsm, with a stiff handle that holds a clean, sculpted line.
    • Two good sides. As both sides are satin, either can be the right side.

    What to make with it

    • Structured dresses and gowns
    • Skirts and tailored pants
    • Evening and bridal wear

    Cutting

    • Pin inside the seam allowance, or use pattern weights: pins can mark satin.
    • Mark on the wrong side with tailor's chalk, tested on a scrap first.
    • Cut as a single layer, all pieces facing the same way, so the sheen looks the same.

    Sewing

    • Use a fresh, sharp needle (size 80) and a good-quality polyester thread, strong enough for the heavier seams, or a mercerised cotton thread. Silk thread is lovely for tacking and hand sewing.
    • Sew a test seam first, and try not to unpick: needle holes can show on satin.
    • Finish the seam allowances neatly for a clean inside.
    • Start each seam by holding the needle and bobbin threads taut behind the foot and turning the wheel by hand. As you sew, hold the fabric gently taut in front of and behind the needle, like an embroidery hoop, but let the machine feed it.
    • A walking foot, if you have one, helps the layers feed evenly without shifting.

    Hems

Give grace satin a deep hem, 4 to 6 cm: bind the raw edge with a bias strip of silk habotai and blindstitch it by hand, catching just a thread. On a curved hem, a faced hem sits flatter.

    Pressing

Press from the wrong side on the silk setting, through a pressing cloth, with no steam: water drops can leave marks. Test on a scrap first.
